It's another short week for anyone marking the Fourth in the States. And after the crowds, the hot dogs, the heat, and one more round of fireworks, there's a decent chance you're ready to get away from the getaway.

So forget the packed beaches and overflowing boardwalks. Scattered across the planet are thousands of islands, some so small you have to zoom all the way in on Google Maps to spot them. They draw a different kind of traveler than Tahiti or Maui does, the kind who wants quiet and adventure on the same trip.
