In Lahaina, Maui, it’s not unusual to walk along Front Street’s beach and see Lani, a 20-year-old Hawaiian monk seal beloved by locals and considered a fixture of the community. On May 5, a 37-year-old tourist from Seattle picked up a rock and threw it directly at her head.
When witnesses confronted him, he shrugged it off: "I don't care. I'm rich." The video went viral, the outrage was immediate, and now he could face up to $50,000 in fines and a year in prison.
