Meet the Man Using Drones to Expose France’s Forgotten Whales

Videographer Seph Lawless has narrowly escaped arrest twice in the past month — once in Argentina and once in France — all for the same reason: using his art to speak for animals who can’t.

In France, Lawless was flying a drone over the shuttered Marineland theme park, where two orcas remain trapped in unsanitary tanks following the park’s closure. As he filmed, he spotted police and security approaching on 4x4s. He narrowly escaped but shared his footage to draw attention to the plight of the Marineland orcas, whose deteriorating conditions have sparked outrage in France and abroad. For Lawless, a little trespassing is worth it if it means the world starts paying attention.
