The 18 Hotels We Loved Checking Into Most in 2025
Some people dream about countries to visit. My travel wish list is more a running list of stays — hillside villas in Tuscany, stone farmhouses in rural Scotland.
The Matador team spent a lot of time on the road living out this dream in 2025. Suzie Dundas slept on an exclusive Great Barrier Reef island, as well as in a century-old grand dame in Oslo and a luxurious hotel-within-a-hotel in Las Vegas. Tim Wenger saw what a carbon-positive property actually looks like in Seattle. And I capped my year with Sina Hotels on a grand tour of Italy, from the Bernini Bristol minutes from the Trevi Fountain to the Centurion Palace on the Grand Canal in Venice.
Of all the places we stayed, 18 hotels made the list of properties we loved checking into most in 2025. These are the ones I’d recommend starting with as you plan next year’s adventures.
Cheers,
Katie Gavin, lifestyle editor
“The five-star property sits directly on Venice’s Grand Canal in Dorsoduro, one of the city’s quieter historic quarters and in the city’s art triangle. Suites overlooking the canal offer some of the city’s most cinematic views.”

“This luxury hotel on an otherwise private island is on Australia’s Great Barrier Reef, accessed via private plane from Cairns. This hotel is as luxurious as it gets.”

“It was clear after one night why this luxury camp stands out in a region crowded with tented lodges. Every tent is positioned for privacy, opening to a large deck so you can sit outside in the early morning and watch the sunrise without seeing another guest.”

“Carved into the shoreline rock and fed by natural hot springs, the open-air onsens, along with slow meals and a quiet ring trail, make this hotel feel designed for being fully present.”

“In a quiet corner of Lake Atitlán in Santa Catarina Palopó, Hotel Casa Palopó offers panoramic views of the lake and its three towering volcanoes. With only 15 rooms, the property stays peaceful in a way that feels almost private.”

“If you want a royal getaway, start with a hotel that once hosted actual royals. Palazzo Fiuggi, the former retreat of King Vittorio Emanuele III, now offers world-class wellness and longevity programs wrapped in a setting that still feels fit for a crown.”
