Three Iconic National Parks Just Scrapped Their Reservation Systems
America’s national parks are more popular than ever, with visitation reaching historic highs. With that in mind, the federal government just scrapped reservation systems at Yosemite, Glacier, and Arches for summer 2026, reopening the gates to anyone who wakes up and thinks, “Hey, I should go to a national park today.”
Supporters call it a win for access and spontaneity. Critics see a return to traffic jams, packed trailheads, and the overcrowding that forced these parks to limit entry in the first place. And with tighter budgets than last year, managing peak-season crowds may be harder than ever.
Not everyone scored a reservation under the old system. But will being “open to all” actually feel that way when you’re sitting in a four-hour line at the entrance gate?
We break down what this means for travelers and for the parks themselves.
