US Flights Are Cheaper Now Than 10 Years Ago, But There’s a Catch

Coming out of paternity leave after my second kid was born, I quickly realized domestic travel for four is a lot more feasible than an ambitious multi-country grand tour (first kids get all the perks). I noticed something interesting while poking around for flight deals: While prices seem to be rising everywhere else, flights and accommodations seemed to be the same as last year or even lower.

It wasn't just my luck or timing. It turns out that airfare is down about 40 percent from a decade ago when adjusted for inflation. The average nightly cost for lodging hasn’t seen anything quite as drastic, but is down more than 3 percent compared to last year.

Is it a blip and you should book your next trip ASAP, or will costs continue to go down? Hard to say. But as the cost of seemingly everything else continues to go up, flying to and staying somewhere in the US costs less.

Cheers,

IN PARTNERSHIP WITH VISIT LAUDERDALE

Twenty-four miles of pristine beaches and more than 300 miles of navigable waterways have earned Greater Fort Lauderdale two apt nicknames: the “Venice of America” and the “Yachting Capital of the World.” With so much life happening on the water, it’s no surprise that waterfront dining is one of the area’s biggest draws. Here’s where to dig in.
