This New Zealand Attraction Begins After Dark

The elusive pangolin. The mythical narwhal. The quokka, happiest animal on earth. If you're like me, you keep a running list of animals you'd love to see in the wild.

New Zealand has an entry for that list too: the kiwi. The country's national bird, and the nickname for New Zealanders themselves, the kiwi is actually notoriously hard to spot in the wild. Decades of conservation work have finally made it possible to see one up close.

That chance lives in Rotorua, on New Zealand's North Island. The town has long drawn visitors for its geothermal landscapes and Māori culture, but now some are coming for the National Kiwi Hatchery. The facility houses kiwis inside a purpose-built house designed to mimic the native forest this nocturnal bird calls home.
